Salary as a software engineer is in the midst of a huge revolution.
And it’s not just for the tech sector: more and more companies are hiring for the profession, and many of the roles are in industries like banking, insurance and healthcare, and these are all areas where people with engineering degrees have a very high skill set.
The question is: how do you make money in the world’s most lucrative job?
The answer is that a lot of people don’t want to work for the big companies, and so are opting to work as contractors or freelancers.
There are plenty of freelance opportunities out there for those looking to get into the lucrative tech sector, and you can find some of them in the UK too, and some of the best ones are located in London.
Here’s how to make it work, with some advice from our friends at the BBC Money team.
1.
Choose the right positionThe first thing to consider is where to work.
A good job in the tech industry requires an enviable salary and is often competitive.
The more skilled your employees are, the higher the pay will be.
However, there are also jobs that require a certain level of skill that aren’t available in the IT industry.
If you want to go into finance or IT, for example, you will have to get experience in those areas.
For some companies, this is enough.
But if you want a job in healthcare, or in financial services, it’s crucial to be able to apply for the roles.
The key to this is to be prepared to work hard, and to work under the conditions and on a contract basis.
The first step is to figure out what you want and how much you can earn, and then to get the best possible deal from the employer.
Some people will choose to work from home or as a contractor, but that can mean you’ll pay a bit more and work longer hours.
Another option is to do part-time work, and pay your rent while you are there.
You might also consider joining a union to secure a better deal, but you will still need to make sure you are treated fairly.
In any case, there’s no reason you shouldn’t work in a job that is available to you.
2.
Be prepared to pay for accommodationThere’s no shortage of cheap hotels and hostels in the capital, and if you live close to the centre of London, you can afford to pay the rent on the weekends.
But if you are staying in a bigger, more expensive property, you should be prepared for a higher cost.
One of the key elements of this is the hostel fee, which can be up to £100 per night.
This can be a significant amount, but if you work in the finance or banking sectors, it may be worth it. 3.
Plan your travelThere are lots of cheap flights around London, and there are lots to choose from, from cheap flights to long-haul flights.
The key is to find the cheapest flights to suit your needs.
For example, if you’re a freelancer and prefer to work in finance, you might be able the cheapest flight to the UK from the US, or the cheapest from France, or from the UK, or somewhere in between.
4.
Know your skillsWhen it comes to software engineering, the biggest misconception is that you need to be an expert.
You need to know what you are looking for, and be able see how to get what you need.
It’s a good idea to take a class on coding.
Also, be prepared when you are applying for the position, as the employer will need to prove that you are qualified to do the job.
5.
Get experienceThe most important thing is to make the best out of the job you’re applying for.
“I’ve been in finance and I’ve done this for 30 years, and it’s a huge career, but it’s very difficult,” says Dr Mark Coker, a professor of finance at Warwick Business School and author of ‘The Job Finder’ (Basic Books).
“You have to be ready to do things that aren [the] normal business practice, which means you have to learn how to code, to be aware of the business, to use a spreadsheet, to do all of that, and I think it takes you a long time to get that experience.”
6.
Look for internshipsYou’ll want to look at internships, which are often unpaid, and are a good way to start your career in the industry.
However you get them, you needn’t worry too much about what you get, as you can pick your own internships.
7.
Pick a good mentorThere are a number of great people in the technology industry, and in addition to being in the
